With the introduction of Avail expansion, a new gameplay mechanic was introduced; the concept of upgrades. The upgrade system allows you to upgrade tokens that are placed in player controlled area. Once you have researched the upgrade for a token, you can instantly upgrade any other instance of that token.
Getting qualified to upgrade a token
Before you can learn to upgrade a token, your character must of achieve the titles which correspond to that set of tokens. You can view the specialization required for a token by visiting the tokens' page.
Upgrades through Matter
Once you have the required title to upgrade a token, you will need to use matter to upgrade the tokens. Equipping the config tool to view the configuration screen for a token will reveal matter types allowed to upgrade the token.

Click on the level 1 matter you wish to learn and it will start blinking. A Progress bar should then appear on your HUD showing your current progress towards learning matter. you gain progress (progress counts backwards from the starting number) by complying with other players requests.
Examples
Upgrading Explosives
The title required to upgrade explosives is Promas. Therefore you must have acquired this title before you are permitted to upgrade explosives.
This explosive is set to make a local fire when triggered. It is not upgraded yet. To gain the fire effect, players would have to throw 4 gas pods then 4 minerals into this explosive. The third level is unnecessary to make a fire explosive.
