The current armageddon is a worldwide rainstrom, followed by a global flood.
The maximum water level will fall slightly short of the vertical position of the monolith but if no monolith exists in the world the water raises to max water height and players spawn at a checkpoint above higher than the water. Any buildings (including power wells) caught in the floodwaters will cease to work, although they will not be destroyed -- the same can't be said for any AI in the water, as they'll die if they can't escape the flood quickly enough. So grab that dive gear and go token hunting, since this is a prime time to raid submerged or hard-to-reach enemy bases as they're either left wide open, defenseless or lacking in the power to function fully.
