The map only renders the area around the base but the outside of the settlement area is left blank. The blank spot cannot be rendered but the player can display a coordinate outside the area as a dot like the radar spits out when it sees people. This can be used for many things and can let you get a better since of where in the world. The easiest way to display things on the map is to place the frequency of the map the same as yours and to call out the coordinates on the radio which will then be displayed on the map
